hi there,

im a caper now living in ontario. i was back home this summer and saw this play. wow, was it true. if it plays in toronto and your a caper, make sure to see it. hilarious!

Toronto Adventures a great trip

The story of Cape Bretoners enduring the culture shock of moving to Toronto is a familiar one, from Don Shebib’s 1970 film Goin’ Down to Road to Ashley MacIsaac’s autobiography Fiddling With Disaster, but Reserve Mines native Lindsey Kyte puts a bright and shiny spin on the saga that’s all her own in Toronto Adventures.

A lot of the fun in the play comes from Kyte’s ability to subvert her own Pollyanna-ish personality, as her seemingly unflappable Maritime cheeriness is continually tested while trying to make it as an actress in the big city. An acting class exercise turns an innocuous bit of the Wizard of Oz into a seduction scene; while her first success revolves around the spirited way she dances with her butt, which manages to be funny and sexy at the same time, even in a Value Village floral sundress.

But Toronto does wear her down over time and her ability to bounce back with the help of her friends — played by Jennetta Lamb, Matthew Nette and Ian Sherwood, who also provides the music — is stretched to the breaking point. Toronto Adventures is based on a series of amusing e-mails written to friends and family back home, which eventually wound up printed in the Toronto Star, and the play succeeds in showing how that East Coast pluck proves to be Kyte’s biggest asset in achieving her dream. It doesn’t hurt that the production, ably directed by Kiersten Tough, has been road-tested in Antigonish and Sydney, making Toronto Adventures one of the more satisfying plays in this year’s Fringe lineup.

Toronto Adventures is in Neptune’s Studio Theatre Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 5:45 p.m.

Hey Caperfive, thanks for the thread! I've never seen this but I bet it's interesting, especially for somebody such as yourself, who's actually experiencing it.
