There are obviously no boundaries to how low a criminal will go.
Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating the theft of items from the residence of Dan Kiley, which they estimate occurred only hours after his death.
Kiley, 46, an employee with Dan Kiley Fuels, was delivering oil Dec. 20 at about 4:40 p.m., when he collapsed outside a home on Third Street. A resident called 911 and with the help of a regional dispatcher performed CPR until EHS arrived.
Paramedics took over CPR at the scene and on the way to the hospital, but the Glace Bay man was pronounced dead at the hospital. It was determined he died of a heart attack.
The following morning family members discovered items missing from the man’s home.
According to Const. Gary Fraser, a safe kept in a closet — believed to have contained a large sum of money and personal papers — was missing, along with a leather Harley Davidson wallet with a silver chain attached.
The last person in the house was a family member at about 4:30 p.m., the day the man died.
“The day of the theft there was no one home at the house after that, as the family were grieving the loss of a loved one.”
Fraser said there didn’t appear to be anything else disturbed.
“There was no forced entry and the doors were locked.”
