Rookie Jeff Wilkins scored three times to lead the University College of Cape Breton to a come-from-behind 3-3 tie with St. Francis Xavier University in Atlantic University Sport men’s exhibition soccer play at UCCB Field, Wednesday.
The play of Wilkins has Capers coach Robbie Chiasson looking forward to having a bonafide striker in his lineup when the regular season begins, Saturday.
“He’s a legitimate threat up front,” said the second-year coach. “When you have somebody like that, even when you are down two goals, you are still in the game. That is always promising.”
The Capers will open their regular season Saturday and Sunday in Fredericton against the University of New Brunswick.
The X-Men opened Wednesday’s scoring with a Tim MacNeil goal at the 12-minute mark, Wilkins tied the game with his first of the game at 25 minutes. Shane Circelli, in the 23rd minute mark, and Federico Krause, six minutes later, allowed St. F. X. to take a 3-1 lead at the half.
Both teams had plenty of chances to score even more goals in the first 45 minutes.
UCCB’s best misses came from Ryan Szeto, who missed wide right on a breakaway. He also buried a cross-field pass into the chest of St. FX keeper Mike Cavallara.
In the second half, Wilkins pulled the Capers to within one with his second of the game at the 48-minute mark. He completed the comeback with his hat-trick goal four minutes later.
“We were down, but it was nice to see them bounce back,” said Chiasson.
“We made some mistakes. I have seen some things we certainly have to correct before we head into UNB on the weekend, but they can be corrected in the next couple of days.”
Besides the play of Wilkins, Chiasson said there were other good performances by Capers in Wednesday’s game.
“Some of the players that I thought would be key players showed they would be key players.”
“(Sean) Saunders in the net — they made a couple of crackerjack goals that were great and weren’t his fault. He is a vocal presence on the backline and the leader from the back.”
Randall Ruiz and Dmitri Butterfield were not in the Capers lineup, Wednesday, but Chiasson expects both to play this weekend against UNB.
“We had some injuries, so we played some young guys in key positions, just to experiment with a few things and see where they might land a spot.
“Once we get a couple of our regular defenders back in the lineup, I think we’ll be okay this weekend.”
The Capers home schedule begins Sept. 18 and Sept. 19 when they host the University of Prince Edward Island at UCCB Field.
