Dean Ouellet netted two goals, including the game winner, as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Shawinigan Cataractes 4-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at Centre 200, Sunday.
“It wasn’t our best game, but the guys battled hard and gave everything we could to get the puck deep,” said Ouellet after the game, played in front of 2,740 fans.
“(Julien Ellis) is a pretty good goalie, so we just wanted to put it on net and get those rebounds.”
The Edmunston, N.B., native scored the eventual game winner at 1:32 of the second period on the power play, tipping a point shot from defenceman Darrell Simich past Cataractes goaltender Julien Ellis.
“We just tried to give it to the point and get the puck on net,” said Ouellet. “I put my stick there and it went between (Ellis’) legs.
“That’s what we want to do on the power play — put it on net and look for the rebounds.”
Ouellet recorded his 20th point in as many games and his eighth and ninth goals of the season — his second an empty netter with 1:01 remaining in regulation.
Pascal Vincent, Eagles’ head coach and general manager, said his squad played a better overall game in a 7-1 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs, Friday.
“I think 4-1 looks good on paper right now, but Shawinigan has a very good team,” said Vincent. “They were in our face, have a lot of speed and it took some time to adjust.
“When we had a few good scoring chances, we put the puck in the net.”
Cataractes forward Benoit Mondou opened the scoring at 3:25 of the first, pulling a nifty deke and roofing the puck over Eagles starter Ondrej Pavelec — despite having Simich in hot pursuit.
The goal was a short-handed marker for Shawinigan.
“(Benoit) Mondou and (Alex) Bourret are pretty dangerous, even on the penalty kill,” said Vincent. “We had to adjust a few little things and be careful having some defensive awareness – even on the power play.
“Even on our power play, Shawinigan was really intense and aggressive on us, so it’s something we have to adjust quicker and move the puck better when we face that kind of penalty kill.”
The Eagles tied the contest with a goal by James Sheppard, who batted in his own rebound past Ellis at 7:36 of the first.
After Ouellet’s winning tally in the second, defenceman Jason Swit jumped in the play and fired a shot past Ellis on a two-on-one at 16:18 for a two-goal advantage.
Pavelec stymied a potential comeback effort in the third period, making a number of key stops among his 35 saves. Ellis made 30 stops in a losing cause.
Cape Breton (15-9-0-1) will hit the road for three games, starting Friday in Quebec to take on the Rempart for an 8 p.m. AST start. They play Saturday against Drummondville at 8:30 p.m. AST and Sunday, they battle Gatineau at 5 p.m. AST.
NOTES: The QMJHL presented James Sheppard their jersey for his selection for the ADT Canada Russia Challenge, to be played in Drummondville at the Marcel Dionne Center, Nov. 21 and in Moncton at Moncton Coliseum, Nov. 23. . .The Eagles are 9-0-0-1 when scoring four or more goals a game this season. . .Seventeen-year-old Lucas LaBelle was released by the team, Friday. Vincent said he’ll be given a few days off and doctors will assess the situation, today. . .Eagles assistant coach Guy Lalonde was struck in the face by a puck in practice, causing a black eye and requiring four stitches.
