A Florence man alleged to have murdered his girlfriend and attempted to cover up his crime by burning the woman’s remains was assigned a Supreme Court trial date, Tuesday.
David Clarence MacKeigan, 35, is charged with first-degree murder and causing an indignity to human remains in connection with the death of 28-year-old Shelly Marie Smith.
Smith disappeared Jan. 25, 2006 and her skeletal remains were discovered in February on the shoreline in Little Pond. The remains were covered over with tires and other flammable materials which had been set ablaze.
MacKeigan’s two-week trial is now scheduled to begin Jan. 7, 2008.
The accused is presently an inmate in a federal prison in Springhill after being sentenced last September to two years on several charges including possession of stolen goods.
However, even upon the completion of his sentence, he will remain in a federal prison having previously secured a Supreme Court order mandating his remand time — while awaiting trial on the murder charge — be in a federal institution.
