A robber escaped on foot after making off with an undisclosed amount of cash from the Princess Credit Union, Wednesday.
Children were heading home from school at the noon hour, unaware of the intense manhunt going on around them as police officers scoured the Fraser Avenue area.
At the time of the robbery there were no customers in the building. One of the four employees called police.
Because it was a training day, all three dogs from the Cape Breton Regional Police K-9 unit were available. The dogs and their handlers combed backyards and alleyways in an effort to track the suspect.
The male, wearing a black hoodie and ski goggles, plaid scarf, black track pants and sneakers, entered the credit union at around 11:30 a.m., demanding money. The suspect has a slight build and is approximately 5’6” in height. Police could not determine his probable age because his face was covered.
“This investigation is ongoing,” said North Division media officer Const. Hank Lamond.
Lamond couldn’t confirm whether there was a weapon involved but he did say there were no weapons visible during the robbery.
Fraser Avenue was blocked off for a time as police organized their search. The Princess Credit Union remained closed Wednesday, but is expected to be open for business today.
“This happened just prior to noontime and there were a lot of kids going home for lunch. This made it a little difficult for the dogs to do their search.”
Regular patrols, along with officers from the general investigation section and the identification unit, searched the heavy residential area surrounding the credit union.
“The bank was pretty busy just prior to him entering the building,” said Lamond. “It is very possible that someone saw this person. We are making an appeal to anyone who might have seen anything, regardless how trivial, to contact the police non-emergency number, 563-5151 or Crime Stoppers, 562-8477.
According to police, this is the third time the Princess Credit Union has been robbed in the past 20 years.
