OzzFest co-founder and organizer Sharon Osbourne released an "open letter" to Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood late last week, taking responsibility for cutting Maiden's sound during its final OzzFest performance on August 20 in Devore, California. Maiden was also pelted with eggs and other objects throughout its show, which Osbourne has not claimed responsibility for. Smallwood posted a message on Iron Maiden's official website after the debacle, implying that Osbourne was behind everything and saying, "In 30 years in this business...I have never seen anything anywhere near as disgusting and unprofessional as what went on that night."
Osbourne claimed that Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson had disrespected her husband, Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, and OzzFest itself throughout the tour.
In her letter, which she signed "the real Iron Maiden," Osbourne wrote, "For 20 shows we were forced to hear Dickinson's nightly outbursts from the stage...Was Dickinson so naive to think that I was going to let him get away with talking sh-t about my family night after night? I don't think he realizes who he's dealing with."
Osbourne wrote that Dickinson never aired any grievances to her or Ozzy Osbourne. She also restated her previous claim that Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris apologized to her husband for Dickinson's behavior.
In an interview with the Sun Online before Maiden's appearance this past weekend at U.K.'s Reading Festival, Bruce Dickinson said about the incident, "Everyone knows it's Sharon Osbourne. It's certainly not Ozzy or Sabbath -- they have too much class to condone stunts like that...we could tell there were a lot of disgusted fans who had paid good money to see us. The audience was incredibly behind us all the way and they really lifted us."
