With Sobey's crying to get the government to allow them to open up on Sunday because they're "not playing on a level playing field with companies such as Shopper's Drug Mart", Newshound thought it was fitting for us to know the following:
Here are some financial numbers from both Sobey's and Shoppers Drug Mart:
Sobey's yearly sales for the fiscal year 2005 were $12.19 billion which was an increase of 10.3% over the previous year.
Shoppers Drug Mart had yearly sales for the fiscal year, ending January 2005, of $4.72 billion which was an increase of 6.9%.
Net earnings for Sobeys for the same fiscal year were $186.7 million compared to Shoppers Drug Marts' $315.8 million.
So, okay, Sobey's isn't allowed to open it's doors on Sunday, as Shoppers Drug Mart is. But what about all the Needs stores, and what about Lawton's? These stores are open on Sundays are they not, in fact, the Needs stores are open on most holidays. Did you know that Sobey's own both Needs and Lawton's? They do!
I, personally, like having a choice of where I shop but on Sunday's I don't do a lot of shopping so it really matters little to me one way or another. But I think Sobey's should be honest about their reason's for wanting to open on Sunday's. It's all about the green.
Perhaps a poll of their employees would give them an idea of how well the idea will go over.
Let us know what you think!

Thanks for posting this iamcaper, I appreciate it. I haven't had much of a chance to be on the site lately so I figured emailing you would be easier for me. I don't imagine you mind me doing so.
If anybody wants to see more info on either Sobey's or Shopper's Drug Mart they can Google their financial reports at the bottom of any page on the Caper Corner.
