Sydney's Vogue gets new owner WebPosted Oct 25 2004 09:17 AM ADT
HALIFAX — The Vogue Theatre in Sydney was sold at an auction on the weekend, but the new owner and future plans for the movie house remain a mystery.
The Art Deco theatre has been a downtown landmark since 1939. It belonged to the Dockwrey family until the weekend, when a mystery buyer paid $125,000 for it.
Peter Dockwrey says he can't reveal the name of the new owner until all the legal work is finished. He also won't say if the Vogue will remain a theatre.
"Certainly the building and structure will have a new beginning," he said.
A local arts co-operative hopes the Vogue becomes a performance space and gallery. The group wanted to buy the theatre, but couldn't raise the money.
"All we have to hope is that [the buyer] has hopes of doing something similar to what we have in mind," said Sandy Reynolds, the group's president. "Maybe the two groups can marry."
Dockwrey hopes to have more to say about the future of the Vogue Theatre on Wednesday.

This is great news! At least we can hope that it is great news. This is a far cry from the $500,000 they were trying to sell the building for over the past number of years.
There are so many great things that can be done with this building, let's hope one of them comes true.
