The Cape Breton Regional Police are on the hunt for two men who escaped from the Cape Breton Correctional Centre in Gardiner Mines Sunday morning.
Sheldon Vaughn Leroy, 36, of North Sydney, and George Thomas McIsaac, 43, of Glace Bay, are considered dangerous, said Const. Ken Turner at a news conference Sunday.
He said it’s not known if either man has a weapon in their possession.
“Both escapees have extensive records,” Turner said without elaborating further.
Police were called to the medium security facility at 9:15 a.m. It’s not being disclosed how the men were able to escape.
Five officers, including members of the K-9 unit, are attempting to track them down.
At this point, Turner said there aren’t any clues to their whereabouts.
“All divisions have been notified but we have no idea where these guys went,” he said.
“There’s nothing else to go on. We want to get this out to the public for any assistance they can give us.”
McIsaac has been in jail since early September charged with armed robbery. It is alleged that McIsaac used a handgun to rob a Glace Bay coffee shop.
However, Leroy is considered the more dangerous of the two, Turner noted.
He’s facing numerous charges, including theft, that relate to incidents in Florence on Sept. 2, during which regional police were involved in a high-speed chase.
Leroy was also arrested in late November 2004 after being on the lam for three months.
He was wanted by police in connection with a shooting incident in Sydney Mines that left Leroy’s brother shot in both legs. The regional police secured a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest
At the time of the shooting, Leroy was on statutory release from a federal prison where he was serving time for car theft.
He requested to be sent back to federal prison instead of the Cape Breton Correctional Centre in order to continue the methadone treatment he was taking to alleviate his addiction to heroin.
He finished the remainder of his sentence and was released in July.
Anyone who comes across either Leroy or McIsaac is asked not to approach them and to call police at 563-5151.
