If you’ve called the Cape Breton regional mayor lately, you might have been taken aback.
"Yah, you reached the cellphone of John W. Morgan. The mayor ain’t takin’ no call right now, you know (what) I’m talkin’ ’bout?" the message goes, with an affected "gangsta" rapper voice.
"He’s busy. He’s doin’ whatever," it continues.
Calls to Mr. Morgan’s usual cellphone number went unanswered Thursday. But the mayor did call back and leave a message with The Chronicle Herald later in the day to call him at another number.
When he was reached there, Mr. Morgan seemed a little embarrassed when asked about the message on the other phone.
"Oh, that was some kids fooling around with the message," he said, adding that it wasn’t his voice.
Most cellphones require a number code to make such a change.
Calls to both numbers later in the day went directly to the message recordings. The message on the second number was much briefer, merely giving his name and asking the caller to leave a number.
The first one ended with: "So drop a message at the tone and y’all can be conversatin’ later, ya hear me?"
Coun. Wes Stubbert said Thursday evening he heard a few people say the mayor had a rather strange recording on his cellphone.
"I heard a few times before he had a weird message on there — he’s a weird bird himself," Mr. Stubbert said.
"It sounds like he’s a hip-hopper or a rapper . . . but I don’t think it’s his voice."
Coun. Ray Paruch said he couldn’t believe his ears when he heard the message.
"This is right clean off the Richter scale — I can’t believe what I heard," said Mr. Paruch.
"I’m only a poor Polish boy from Ashby but that seems pretty strange to me."
Mr. Paruch said he’s neither a pal nor an enemy of the mayor’s, but he figures Mr. Morgan might consider changing the message.
"It seems to me if a reporter called me and asked about that message I’d change it pretty quickly," he said.
Mr. Morgan said he would have to have the offending cellphone disconnected.
