Most people start off the new year with a few extra bills left over from Christmas. Not Helen Penny.
Penny, 71, became Cape Breton’s newest millionaire after arriving at the Atlantic Lottery Corp. office in Moncton, Wednesday, to pick up her cheque for $1 million, from the Atlantic 49 draw Dec. 27.
Penny, who lives in Port Morien, always plays one set of her own numbers and always gets an Instapik.
“I never checked the numbers (Dec. 28). I forgot. I didn’t know we had won until Friday,” she said.
Penny hadn’t even heard there was a winner from Cape Breton.
Her granddaughter, Krista Penny, who lives with her, checked the numbers online Friday. The six Instapik numbers on her ticket — 9, 16, 20, 41, 43 and 48 — matched.
“She said, ‘I think you are a winner.’”
However, with the holiday weekend, it was another five-day wait to claim her prize. In the meantime, the ticket was kept in a bank safe deposit box.
Penny picked up her prize accompanied by her granddaughter, daughter Cora Pictou and a neighbour. Penny is a widow; her husband William died two years ago.
She said there are no special plans in place for the money.
“I guess I will spend some and save some, but I have no plans yet. I have to have time first to think about it.”
However, she did have one stop in mind on her return trip.
“We do need something to eat. I had breakfast this morning but only a muffin.”
