Arson has been deemed the cause of a weekend fire at well-known Whitney Pier building, Archie Nathanson.
Three fire stations from Sydney were called to scene around 2 p.m. Saturday and managed to contain the fire and save the building from complete destruction.
George Muise, spokesperson with the Cape Breton Regional Fire Service, said somebody broke into the vacant building and set the fire.
“It was investigated on Saturday and determined to be arson. The building is boarded up now and secured. That side of the investigation is done.
“Now the police are investigating to see if they can come up with somebody with a motive and determine who might have set the fire.”
Although Muise said the 10 firefighters from the Ashby, Central and Whitney Pier departments did an excellent of keeping the fire to one area, there was still plenty of damage, particularly to the building’s floor joists.
“The guys knocked it down pretty quickly and kept it to that one building.”
Muise said a building inspector will be on site after the holidays to determine the exact damage.
