I think that since the playoffs have now come to a close, we should open up a discussion on the CBA talks, what should/could be done, and if some teams should be contracted.
To start off, here are some financial figures:
Average NHL revenues were $62 million Average NHL profits were -.277 million. Cutting out St. Louis and Washington, average profits were $1.27 million.
The most common salary cap numbers that have been bounced around are $35 million and $45 million. $35 million, in my opinion, is a nice number as it reflects the salaries of a majority of teams in the league. The biggest problem I see with it though is that it falls way below the salaries of the big market teams (Detroit, Colorado, Rangers). However, $45 million is above two thirds of the teams in the league. I'd suggest a soft cap of $35 million whereas teams could spend more but with a luxury tax.
As for new rules in the CBA, I think no-touch icing has to be instated due to the increasing number of serious injuries. A zero-tolerance of serious stick infractions must be included as well.
Other things I'd like to see:
penalties are served for the full 2 minutes, even if a goal is scored.
goalie pads are shaved a tad in size
eliminate the 2-line pass to open up the game and create more scoring chances
