A missing man was the focus of an intense ground and water search Sunday.
David James Hinchey, 63, was last seen leaving his Heelan Street home in New Waterford at 9 a.m. Saturday by his sister whom he lives with.
She reported Hinchey missing to police at 11 p.m. after he failed to return from a walk to the store.
Cape Breton Ground Search and Rescue was called to the scene about three hours later.
While a command post was set up at the Cape Breton Regional Police community office on Plummer Avenue early Sunday, fire departments from New Waterford, Glace Bay and North Sydney also joined the search.
“They’re searching the whole town,” said regional police Const. Gary Fraser.
“They’re putting two boats in the water — one from the North Sydney fire department and one from Glace Bay fire (department). They’re going to be searching the shoreline also.”
Fraser said Hinchey doesn’t suffer from dementia or any other serious health problems.
The local hospital and businesses have been canvassed by police in the hopes someone saw him, but so far there are no leads.
“Time is of the essence that we locate him as soon as we can. With his age and the weather, he could deteriorate really quick.”
Hinchey is described as 5’6” tall, 140 pounds, short grey hair, and he was wearing dark coveralls, a dark blue winter jacket, a dark baseball hat and white sneakers.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact police at 563-5151 or Crime Stoppers at 562-8477.
