Six fights were won and lost in the inaugural Pier Brawl in Whitney Pier.
The evening, organized by Dalton’s Gym, was the first in a series of planned boxing events for the Whitney Pier community in the coming months.
On Saturday’s agenda were fights, martial arts displays and a tribute to some of the greatest boxers in Whitney Pier’s rich boxing history.
The main event featured provincial champions, Craig Hillier of Sackville and Bedford’s Kenny Helif. Hillier grabbed a decision from his mainland rival. He was also given the award for best senior open fighter.
Saturday’s opening bout saw Sackville’s Adam Walter win a split-decision over Carl Campbell from Dalton’s Gym.
In the second fight, Carl Gouthro of Dalton’s Gym stopped Dillon Ross from the Rhy-Mac Boxing club in the second round.
Saturday’s third fight, a 145-pound bout, was also stopped in the second round. Malcolm MacDonald from the Tommy Gordon Club took the decision over Matt Dalton from the host gym.
Canadian welterweight champion Michael Gerrow of Sydney Mines then battled Bedford’s Dior Arif. The mainland fighter was given the decision.
The night’s fifth fight saw Stephen Cannel defeat Curtis White of North Sydney.
After the fights concluded, Gouthro was given the award for top fighter. MacDonald won the best senior novice award.
The intermission of Pier Brawl featured a demonstration by East Coast Taekwondo and Pioneer Boxing awards for Tyrone Gardiner, Gordon ‘Gramps’ Kiley, Roy ‘Honey’ Long, Bennie Delorenzo, Rocky MacDougall and Sugar Ray Maxwell.
Brandon Magliaro and Austin Dalton also put on a shadow boxing demonstration.
The next brawl is planned for the first week of the new year.
