The biggest upset of the Canadian women’s university soccer championship wasn’t to be for Cape Breton University, Thursday.
The Atlantic University Sport champion Capers jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the top-ranked Ottawa Gee Gees before surrendering a late goal and losing a 2-1 overtime decision.
“I was proud of them,” said Capers coach Stephen ‘Ness’ Timmons following his team’s only loss of the season. “They battled to the end, that is for sure.”
Brenna Dixon scored for Cape Breton, while Valerie May and Courtney Luscombe replied for Ottawa in the first game of the tournament for both schools.
“We scored early and sat back in a defensive mode and tried to hold them. Six minutes left in the game they tied it and had the momentum going into overtime.”
The Capers opened the scoring, just one minute into the opening frame, shocking the nation’s No. 1 ranked Gee-Gees, when Brenna Dixson launched a 35-yard strike that fell through the grasp of Ottawa goalie Katrina Vulic, who appeared to be caught off her line and surprised when the shot sailed through her hands.
The goal against was just the seventh the Gee-Gees have given up all season.
After the goal, the Gee-Gees controlled the pace of the game as CBU focused on defence and spent a majority of the half attacking the Cape Breton goal.
Ottawa finished the half with four corner kicks and two shots on net but trailing 1-0.
The Gee-Gees continued their strong play in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the Cape Breton net.
The relentless Ottawa attack finally paid off in the 83rd minute when May corralled the ball at the top left edge of the Caper box and let go a perfectly placed top right corner shot that eluded Caper’s goalie Jessica MacDermid.
Ottawa nearly ended the drama in injury time when Luscombe knifed through the Capers defence and attempted to chip MacDermid from in close, but the Cape Breton netminder was equal to the task and kept the score level as the teams headed into overtime.
“We tried to regroup at the break, but it is tough when you defend that long and try to come out again in the overtime.”
Nine minutes into the extra frame, Luscombe was the beneficiary of a poor clearing attempt by the Capers and slammed the ball into the roof of the net from just outside the six-yard box.
The Capers were unable to conjure up another goal as the game ended in a 2-1 win for Ottawa after two periods of extra time.
The loss dropped CBU to the consolation round. The best they can now hope for is a fifth place finish. If they beat St. FX, today they’ll play for the Top-5 finish, Saturday.
